The Commerce Report containing data for 2016 shows the sector has strengthened its position, with an increase in the inter-annual volume of retail and wholesale business alike.

According to data from the last edition of the Municipal Omnibus Survey in November 2017, most city residents are satisfied with the balance of commerce in the city (8.2 out of 10), shop opening hours and the personal attention offered. When it comes to shopping, trust is the most valued aspect, followed by personal attention and professionalism. The main criteria relating to products purchased are quality and price. Payment in cash is slightly more common than payment by card when it comes to regular purchases such as groceries. Credit card payment is proportionately more common for larger products relating to leisure and culture.

E-commerce continues to grow. Some 60% of Barcelona residents have made internet purchases at some point, with the most common online purchases relating to leisure, clothing, footwear and IT products.
