Ten shops in C/ Major de Sarrià and seven Barcelona design schools will be unveiling their designs for the Christmas lights on Thursday 30 November at 7 pm as well as a display of products especially created for local shop windows. Retailers and students have been working together to come up with some very special window displays for the Christmas campaign. The idea is to add extra vitality and the initiative has been promoted by Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Design Centre, in collaboration with the Sarrià shopping hub.

The starting point for the project was to use Christmas lights, traditionally associated with the street, to light up shop windows and thereby become a fundamental part of a shop window design project. The idea was to come up with a lighting design for show windows which is unique, tying in with the attributes of an innovative, creative and design-orientated city while boosting the Christmas spirit.

Local and other activity establishments having prominent window displays and collaborating with the Sarrià hub have been invited to take part. They are as follows:

  • Alessandro Sacco (Major de Sarrià, 76)
  • Llanes Bricall (Major de Sarrià, 72)
  • Cookiteca (Major de Sarrià, 74)
  • Forn de pa Sarrià (Major de Sarrià, 100)
  • Josefa Cortinas (Major de Sarrià, 102)
  • Kibs (Major de Sarrià, 41)
  • Mota Descans (Major de Sarrià, 73)
  • Sports Sarrià (Major de Sarrià, 63)
  • Perruqueria Tool Barcelona (Major de Sarrià, 108)
  • Sálem (Major de Sarrià, 26)

The organisers held a draw to assign an establishment to each design school and students on higher degree courses or taking masters in design at the following schools were invited to take part:

  • ARTIDI Escola d'Aparadorisme de Barcelona
  • EINA Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art de Barcelona
  • ESDI Escola Superior de Disseny
  • Escola Superior de Disseny i d'Art Llotja
  • Escola Superior de Disseny i d'Arts Plàstiques ESDAP Deià
  • IED Barcelona Escola Superior de Disseny
  • TERRASSA Escola Municipal d'Art

Each school has worked on the design and production of one or two window displays. A tutor has been monitoring each project. Students have developed a comprehensive design project based on the measurements of each window display and used recyclable and sustainable materials, with a fixed budget for production. Retailers and students have worked together closely to come up with the best solution for displaying their products and agreed on the final project between them. The designs will be unveiled on Thursday, 30 November and there will be a tour around the participating displays. A popular vote will also be held to choose the most innovative window display, with an award for the students, school and shop which created the winning design. The designs will be on display from 30 November to 5 January.
