An exhibition and prize pay homage to local commerce

When

19/4/2017

This Wednesday, 19 April, will see the opening at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona(CCCB) of the exhibition Small Shops, Big Changes, in recognition of the work done by local commerce in our city. The inauguration will coincide with the presentation of the 2017 Bookmark Prize, which every year goes to the best drawings of school students taking part in the municipal programme Commerce in Schools. The 14 winning drawings will be printed in the form of bookmarks and distributed to city shops for St Jordis Day.

Local shops will be the stars of an event that will be held at the CCCB in the evening, with shopkeepers, teachers, families, children and teenagers present. It is part of the “Schools and Commerce” programme which, over the course of 11 years, has built bridges between more than 40,000 students, from 160 schools, and some 60 local shops, with the aim of highlighting the value of the local retail trade among young children and fostering critical and responsible consumption.

Prizes will be awarded to the best 14 drawings, by children and teenagers, of unusual locals shops in Barcelona. Some 500,000 copies of these drawings will be printed which city shops will offer their customers as bookmarks for St Jordi’s Day.

Small Shops, Big Changes

Anyone at the prize-giving ceremony will be able to take advantage of it to attend the inauguration of the “Small Shops, Big Changes” exhibition, which explores the intangible values of local shops. This touring exhibition uses short stories to explain how these shops transform and bring neighbourhoods together, how they are working for a more sustainable society and, in many cases, strive to minimise waste and promote social commitment.

If you want to see the exhibition, you can go to:

  • Centre Cívic Torre Llobeta, from 22 May to 5 June
  • Envelat Bicentenari de les Festes de Gràcia, from 5 to 7 June
  • Centre Cívic Can Castelló, from 20 to 30 June
  • Centre Cultural Casa Orlandai, from 5 to 29 September
