Beyond the smart city
Barcelona City Council presented its ‘Barcelona, Digital City’ plan at the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) 2016, as the roadmap for technological sovereignty for 2017-2020 and centring on the values of an open, equal, circular and democratic city.
The ‘Barcelona, Digital City’ plan, headed by the Commissioner for Technology and Digital Innovation, Francesca Bria, sets out how Barcelona can go beyond being a smart city and become a leader in technology, with a clear public and citizen leadership.
‘Barcelona, Digital City’ offers a transition towards technological sovereignty, whereby the municipal government, companies, innovative networks and citizens use digital strategy to fulfil technological and social needs. It’s the start of a participatory process for the common construction of public policies on technological innovation in the city, based on real issues perceived by sectors of the public or groups affected by those policies.
The Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC), a leading international summit on the link between technological revolution and urban reality, was held from 14 to 16 November 2016 at the Gran Via Barcelona Trade Fair. The event has become a professional, institutional and social meeting point.
