Pier01 is one of the most important Barcelona Tech City projects. This area in the Palau de Mar houses over a hundred digital companies and start-ups. In two years it has become a physical focus for digital enterprise and is one of the initiatives which make Barcelona an innovation hub for southern Europe.

Barcelona Tech City is a private non-profit association made up of over 600 Barcelona-based companies from the digital technology sector. Its goal is to help consolidate the city as an International hub for technology by fostering digital Enterprise and attracting investment and talent.

The idea was to create a physical space to act as a meeting point for the digital ecosystem and to this end one of its most important projects, Pier01, was set up two years ago. The project has now become a point of reference in this sector.

Housed in the Palau de Mar, Pier01 is a facility of 11,000 m2 which is home to over a 100 companies and start-ups, with 1,200 professionals working there. The First Deputy Mayor, Gerardo Pisarello, visited the complex on 3 April, accompanied by the Commissioner for Technology and Digital Innovation at the City Council, Francesca Bria.

“If Barcelona is a hub for innovation, it’s also thanks to initiatives such as Barcelona Tech City. We’re working together to consolidate the city as a major technology hub in southern Europe”, affirmed Pisarello.

Pier01 puts entrepreneurs and companies at different stages of growth in touch with each other, from accelerators to well-established companies. The area includes a co-working area, showrooms and communal areas to foster innovation and collaboration.

Entrepreneurs and corporations

One of the things which make the hub unique is the symbiosis between entrepreneurs and corporations. Companies such as SEAT, Telefónica, Gas Natural and Payment Innovation Hub (Caixabank, VISA, Samsung, Arval, Global Payments) are all represented at the centre, having made the building part of their innovation operations. The same area thus combines entrepreneurial talent and the in-house talent of major corporations.

Another important aspect is the internationalisation of the hub. Some 30% of people working at Pier01 are from other countries or have international experience.

Pier01 is the result of public and private collaboration and is backed by Barcelona City Council.

The city’s entire digital ecosystem is represented within Barcelona Tech City. From fledgling enterprises and companies to venture capital funds, business angels, corporations reaching out to the entrepreneurial world, business schools, technology universities and public bodies.

Their goals are to promote the Barcelona technology brand at an international level, to help create an ideal environment for digital companies, to attract local and international investment, to connect local and international talent with companies and collaborate with other organisations to accelerate the technology ecosystem.
