The Design Hub, an example of good sustainability practices

On Tuesday, November 28, Barcelona City Council is organizing the Ajuntament + Sostenible [A+S] (City Council + Sustainable) day; a meeting of municipal workers who are committed to sustainability. The day will end with the A+S awards, which will showcase the City Council’s best sustainability practices, such as the Pla de sostenibilitat i DGQA, (Sustainability and general direction of environmental assurance plan) in the facilities of the Barcelona Institute of Culture (ICUB).

In recent years, ICUB has been working to get its facilities recognized with the Distinction of Environmental Quality Assurance (DGQA): an ecolabel awarded by the Government of Catalonia to buildings that exceed a series of environmental quality requirements well beyond the minimum established by current regulations. So far, fifteen of its facilities, including the Design Hub building, have earned this distinction.

The Design Hub is an example of ICUB's commitment to the sustainability of its facilities. In 2014, despite having received the DQGA, the center launched a series of water, electricity and lighting reforms, to become even more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Among the improvements that were carried out were the windows of the west facade and the roof, which translates into savings of 20,000kw, and a 13,000kg reduction in carbon dioxide emissions every year.
