Prevention of pests and diseases: selecting species

Preventing pests and diseases that affect the city's great diversity of plant species starts with their selection for planting.

This selection is made according to adaptation and tolerance criteria for Barcelona's climatic and environmental conditions and urban characteristics (type of street: width of pavements, balconies, road etc.) The selection is also made by avoiding allergenic and invasive species and also includes species that provide colour when flowering.

For more than 10 years now, species that have adaptation problems or are found in excess have been replaced with new ones to ensure that they do not exceed 15% of the city's total. Species diversification guarantees the promotion of biodiversity.
