Montserrat Roig Creative Writing Bursaries

The Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB), as part of the UNESCO Barcelona City of Literature programme, invites applications for these bursaries with a financial value of 3000 Euros for each of 20 selected authors.

Target Candidate

The bursaries are open to authors of literary works, writers, poets, translators and/or journalists of any nationality and who have a minimum of one published work in their name and a corresponding ISBN number.

 

Individuals who have already been awarded one of the Montserrat Roig writing prizes will not be eligible for these bursaries.

 

To take part in the selection process writers must be aged 18 or over.

Length

Authors awarded a bursary will be given a space to develop their writing project in different locations in Barcelona over a period of two months.

Bursary Features

Selected authors will receive one thousand five hundred Euros (1500€) each month over the two-month period and have access to a work space to develop a writing project. The endowment, therefore, of each prize will be three thousand Euros (3000€).

 

Travel and maintenance costs for the two months will be covered by the author.

 

Throughout the two months authors will have access to a free workspace to develop the writing project that has been chosen.

 

Available spaces are located in the following organisations:

  • Museu Picasso
  • Biblioteca de Catalunya
  • Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres
  • Arxiu Històric de Barcelona
  • Castell de Montjuïc
  • Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes
  • Fundació Joan Miró
  • Biblioteca de Nou Barris
  • Biblioteca Francesca Bonnemaison

 

The workspace given to each author will have a table and chair. The writer will have to bring their own computer.

The spaces will be available over a first period: between March and June 2019 (spring) and a second one: September to November 2019 (autumn).

Conditions

Those awarded a bursary must respect the working norms of the venue where they carry out their residency.

The successful grant holder must:

  • Share with other grant holders at a conference their experiences during the residency
  • Participate in the open session at the end of the residency
  • Present the completed writing project to the Institut de Cultura at the end of the bursary period
  • If the work is to be published, mention in the credits that “Aquesta obra va rebre una Beca Montserrat Roig de Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura – Institut de Cultura – Ajuntament de Barcelona” (“This work received a Montserrat Roig bursary from Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura – Institut de Cultura – Ajuntament de Barcelona”) in accordance with the corresponding corporate image regulations.

Selection Criteria

A pre-selection of the application with be made according to the following criteria:

  • Degree of clarity and specificity of the project
  • Literary quality of the sample text submitted by the author
  • Professional career path of the applicant outlined in the CV
  • Interest raised by the project for the Barcelona City of Literature project
  • Project’s link with the city of Barcelona (this is not an essential prerequisite but will be evaluated positively)

 

For pre-selected candidates there will be an interview with the selection committee.

The organising body will offer authors a time period and specific workspace for carrying out the residency in line with the preferences of each author.

If submitted applications do not comply with the minimum requirements, the selection committee may declare the prizes null and void.

Selection

The selection committee will be made up of three highly-respected independent individuals in the field, chosen by the Oficina Barcelona Ciutat de la Literatura.

Application Submission

To apply for the bursaries, applicants must complete this registration form before 21 December 2018 and add the following documentation:

  • Photocopy of DNI/NIE/Passport
  • Applicant CV (maximum 2 pages)
  • Extract from an original published work (maximum 10 pages) which states: Author, Title, Publishing House, Publication Year and ISBN number
  • Motivation, description and extract of the project to be completed over two months in a maximum of 5 pages

 

The application must be submitted in Catalan, Spanish or English. Extracts from works published in other languages must be translated into any of these three languages.

Other related grants
