FOCUS ON > The Sochi Project

18.02.2015 - 21.02.2015

FOCUS ON is back, a meeting point organised by La Virreina Image Centre and CFD Barcelona aiming to discover new formats, ideas and strategies that are reshaping the current landscape of documentary photography.

This third edition of the season is devoted to The Sochi Project, a work of “slow journalism” by the photographer Rob Hornstra and the writer Arnold van Bruggen. The pair documented the Russian city of Sochi from 2009 until it became the centre for world attention as the site of the Winter Olympic Games in 2014.

Using different formats —an exhibition, a workshop, a lecture and a round table— this independent photojournalism project will be presented in Barcelona for the first time, opening up a debate about "multimedia storytelling” and the new possibilities for the production and distribution of documentary photography.

As part of the programme, La Virreina Image Centre will host both the opening lecture, delivered by the photographer Rob Hornstra, and the round table "Multimedia Storytelling. New Platforms for Documentary Photography”. Besides the two authors of The Sochi Project, the participants at this round table will also include the photographers Olmo Calvo and José Colón. The former will talk about his latest multimedia work, Wawachaña, Giving Birth on the Top of the World, whilst the latter will present Me-Mo Magazine, the new independent multimedia platform that he recently launched with fellow photographers Fabio Bucciarelli, Manu Brabo, Diego Ibarra Sánchez and Guillem Valle.
