2019 at the Museu del Disseny: what have we prepared?

Along with the Christmas and New Year celebrations, comes the time to start thinking about the challenges and projects for the 2019 new year. Which is why we are offering you a taste of what we at the Museu del Disseny have planned for the next 12 months.

A year of social design

Social design will be the main focus of our work in 2019. We will see it in the programming of the "Design in family" conference, in the Design for Living Conferences and other activities and proposals that will emphasise this area of design through practice and reflection.

"The advertising boom" (until 31st March, 2019)

The temporary exhibition that opened on 13th December and which can be seen until 31st March, 2019, offers a tour of commercial advertising from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of the 20th century.

In "The advertising boom. Tin, cardboard and tile posters. 1890-1950" you will find 250 items, iconic advertising images of brands and products of everyday use. The works come from the Mateu Llinàs i Audet Collection in Barcelona (tin and cardboard) and from the Manises Museum of Valencia (ceramics).

In addition, to complement the exhibition, a number of parallel activities will begin on 15th January such as the lecture series, at which the curator and director of the Museu del Disseny, Pilar Vélez will be taking part, alongside prominent professionals such as Lluís Bassat, Carolina Serra and Albert Isern, among others.

4th Conference on Creativity and Trends (14th April, 2019)

In April, we will be hosting a new edition of this conference, which brings the great market trends in ideas, concepts and innovative practices to design professionals and creative industries through lectures, workshops and conference proposals.

The starting points of the fourth edition of the “Conference on Creativity and Trends” will be excitement and multi-sensory experiences, and notable among the headliners will be the French philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky and the British Bompas & Parr. In short, we are preparing an inspiring conference that you cannot miss.

"Joaquim Capdevila, jeweller" Retrospective (October 2019)

In October, under the umbrella of the  ENJOIA’T Contemporary Jewellery Awards organised by A-FAD, the Association of Artists and Craftspeople of FAD (Fostering Arts and Design), we are preparing a retrospective exhibition of Joaquim Capdevila, one of the key figures of the "New Catalan jewellery".

Exhibition "Victor Papanek: the politics of design" (31st October, 2019 -2nd February 2020)

At the end of October, and running until 2nd February, 2020, we will inaugurate one of the great exhibitions of the year at the Museu del Disseny: “Victor Papanek: the policy of design”, the first major retrospective centred on the designer, author and activist.

The aim of the exhibition is to rediscover Papanek as one of the most influential pioneers of the 20th century social and ecological design approach that began in the sixties, focusing on inclusion, social justice and sustainability, issues of great relevance for design today.
