Food waste is a problem in today's society and design plays a key role in offering solutions. For this reason Nevera Solidària (Solidarity Fridge); Espigoladors, PAA-Plataforma Aprofitem els Aliments-, Mercabarna and Gastrofira have organised a conference on L'aprofitament dels aliments: Un camp per desenvolupar solucions des del Disseny (Making Use of Food: a Field to Develop Solutions Through Design).
The event will include a presentation session and round-table discussions to explore what initiatives for making use of food exist throughout the food chain, from the field to the table.
During the first part, Paco Muñoz, vice-president of the Plataforma Aprofitem els Aliments (The Making Use of Food Platform, PAA) will explain what it means to make use of food, the global framework, the current situation and the limitations and expectations for the future. Later, Juan Marcos de Miguel, head of the Public Health Service of Vallès Occidental Oest and initiator of the project Nevera Solidaria a Catalunya (Solidarity Fridge in Catalonia), will explain what the current legislation is on this matter and what the limits or considerations are in creating solutions through design.
Also presented in this session will be the projects that have arisen during March and April at the Disseny per l’aprofitament dels aliments (Design for Making Use of Food) Workshop, held in collaboration with FAD and Veritas, with 29 students from design and visual arts colleges in the city.
We will finish with a round-table discussion chaired by Diletta Parente, journalist and co-founder of the PAA, in order to share initiatives on food use with:
- Mireia Barba, head of the Espigoladors project and founding member of Plataforma Aprofitem els Aliments
- Josep Tejedo, General Manager of Mercabarna
- Bernat Benito, Executive Chef / Production Manager of Gastrofira.
