Operation Christmas is under way as a prevention measure for road safety, aimed at cutting the number of victims on the roads over the festive period. City Police will be stepping up breathalysing and drug tests in the coming days in all the city’s districts.
The police corps has announced that control points will operate around the clock, particularly in the evenings and the early hours. The aim is to detect drivers circulating while over the legal limit of alcohol or under the effects of drugs.
On the night of 16 December a total of 321 tests were carried out between 10 pm and 6 am, with 18 drivers testing positive and two cases resulting in criminal proceedings. Out of 27 drug tests carried out, 14 were positive.
In 2015 the number of traffic accidents linked to drink driving rose by 10.53%. Drink and drug driving was the main indirect cause of accidents involving victims in the city last year.
