Shared educational time

The city and its neighborhoods have been the first targets the organizers of "Temps i Qualitat de Vida" [Time and Quality of Life] have chosen to implement time policies aimed at relieving the impact of one of the most challenging aspects families face today, namely, coordinating children activities outside school hours with parents work schedules and other needs, and how that leisure time is dedicated to educational and creative oriented activities.

With that in mind, from 2005 to 2011 we have brought to Barcelona "Temps de Barri, temps educatiu compartit" [Neighborhood Times, Shared Educational Time], a research program of active participation developed together with the Direcció d'Usos del Temps [Uses of Time Headquarters] (before becoming "Temps i Qualitat de Vida" [Time and Quality of Life]); the Institut d'Educació [Institute of Education] and the different districts in the city of Barcelona; and the Fundació Jaume Bofill [Jaume Bofill's Foundation]. The program has been implemented district by district after surveying the different involved beneficiaries of the programs (learning centers, families, community services, institutions, etc.), and making a diagnosis of the results. This information helped us design and implement actions that helped improve children and teen's uses of time and space in learning centers, effectively keeping work and family time schedules better coordinated.

Some of the types of programs developed in this project are, for instance, the management of after-school programs in the neighborhoods, opening playgrounds after school for the use of further formative activities, and the introduction of alternative games in school playgrounds. Since 2012, all the "Patis Escolars" [School Playgrounds] opened in the different neighborhoods in the city are now run by the Institut d'Educació [Institute of Education] of Barcelona's City Council.
