How is Barcelona perceived? Political stability, good services and a social agenda
Municipal. Barcelona City Council is the institution which scores best and the public perception that the city improves year after year continues.
According to the municipal services survey, the largest conducted by the City Council and based on 6,000 personal interviews, Barcelona City Council is the institution which rates best among Barcelona residents, who also feel the city has improved since last year and will continue to do so in the future, giving good scores to municipal services. As regards concerns, people all around the city are much more concerned about tourism, while worries relating to access to housing have also increased slightly.
Barcelona City Council gets the best rating (6.4 out of 10) in the historical series of this survey. Some 84.6% of citizens approve of municipal management, with a rise of nearly two per cent in the economic sphere, coming out at 43.4%. Some 37.1% of those interviewed think the city has improved compared to last year and overall satisfaction about living in Barcelona continues to be very positive, scoring 7.8 out of 10.
The First Deputy Mayor, Gerardo Pisarello, asserted: “The survey clearly shows that Barcelona is perceived as a city which manages things properly from an economic point of view, which guarantees economic stability and at the same time pays attention to the social agenda”.
The public asked municipal managers for improvements in aspects like proximity, including cleaning services, the reduction and better management of tourism and the facilitation of access to housing, as well as ongoing improvements to facilities and services.
Municipal services actually consolidated their good ratings, thirteen of them obtaining better scores than last year. Services scoring particularly highly include the public library network, civic centres and municipal markets. For the first time ever, the survey also asked for people’s opinions on the tram, which became the best-scoring transport system (7.2 out of 10), compared to the metro (7.1), the bus (7.0) and the Bicing service (6.2).
Tourism is the main concern in the city, practically doubling the result from last year (from 8.1% last year to 15.6% this year), well above concerns over unemployment and labour conditions (8.6%), circulation and traffic (7.3%) and access to housing (6.7%). Regarding the latter, the main concern among city residents is the price of housing in general and the increase in rents.
The municipal service survey was conducted via 6,000 face-to-face interviews in people’s homes between 4 April and 27 June, before the attacks on 17 August.
