CANTA GRAN! fills L’Auditori with close to 500 singers

Christmas. The singers, all of whom are over 60, performed a dozen popular songs from Mediterranean countries.

Close to 500 singers filled L’Auditori’s large hall on 9 December during the 19th Christmas Concert for the Elderly People of Barcelona CANTA GRAN!, which is organised by Barcelona City Council and L’Auditori.

Following several weeks of rehearsals, the singers performed a repertoire of popular songs from all over the Mediterranean basin, from Syria or Algeria to Israel, Italy, France and Catalonia, among others. Conducted by Montserrat Meseses and with staging by Ignasi Tomàs, musical arrangements by Jordi Cornudella and texts adapted by David Pintó, the nineteenth edition of the Christmas Concert for the Elderly People of Barcelona featured an ensemble of five musicians and two solo vocalists to accompany the singers.

In her opening speech, Councillor for Children, Youth, the Elderly and Functional Diversity Marga Marí-Klose highlighted that “you, the elderly, have built the city day by day. And you continue to do so from your retirement. Thank you for your daily efforts for a more human Barcelona.”
