More electric buses in the city’s streets

The new fleet of buses operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) becomes more sustainable with the addition of more zero-emissions vehicles. The fleet is getting 78 new completely electric buses, 49 standard units which are charged overnight and 29 articulated units which can be charged whenever possible. Moving forward, some 24% of the fleet should be zero-emissions in 2024.

The new electric buses are now arriving and being brought into circulation on wholly electric lines (H16 and V15, although they can also circulate on the 7 and 33 lines). The 78 buses cost 46 million euros in all and come in addition to the 30 already in service.

The tender process for this year’s purchase of 88 electric buses for overnight charging (68 standard and 20 articulated vehicles) will see the buses arrive between the end of this year and the start of 2024, through an investment of nearly 50 million euros. The addition of a further 36 night-time charging buses has also been announced (29 articulated and 7 standard), with the tendering process to come shortly and the vehicles to arrive in 2024.

Next year, the fleet will have 232 completely electric vehicles and 44 hydrogen buses, enabling TMB to cut CO2 emissions by 4,785 tonnes and NO2 emissions by 22 tonnes.
