The United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) network is the largest and most important international network of its kind. Over 100 cities from 127 countries, we are part of this network which represents more than half of the world's population.

The last few days have seen Bogotá playing host to this organisation's fifth congress, which concluded with the election of a new president. While I consider it an honour and responsibility to have been chosen as co-president of the UCLG, I also see it as a great opportunity, above all, to reclaim Barcelona's international leadership and make the most of the co-presidency as way of setting out the priorities of a new urban agenda in alliance with other cities.

The policies we are implementing in Barcelona have been attracting great interest in many parts of the world. Numerous cities are watching our city as it takes on present challenges and prepares for future ones.

Fighting against growing inequalities, combatting climate change, championing the right to housing, taking in those who are fleeing from war or famine etc., are priorities that require courageous policies. They will be even more effective if we apply them while cooperating with other cities.
