Festa major , La Mercè , Opposition

The saddest thing about the "flag war" between the ERC and the PP is that it hides what should be today's headline: yesterday we reclaimed the popular character of the city's festival, by removing the barriers that CiU had put up in Plaça de la Mercè in recent years because they were worried about people protesting, by getting rid of the official procession and joining in the public parade with the dragons and giants, and by separating the Mass from the official programme. Everything went off really well: the square was more crowded than ever, we had the best diada castellera with the city's six human-tower groups, and lots of people taking part in all the activities. But the ERC and the PP wanted to attract attention and get a photo opportunity by using the City Hall balcony as if it were an electoral space. That shows a lack of respect for Barcelona's residents on the day of the festa major, which is a festival for everyone. Their irresponsibility and electioneering had serious consequences. These acts should not be allowed to tarnish a festival where the stars are, and will continue to be, Barcelona's people.
