Wednesday’s exercise saw the city’s firefighters respond to a simulated gas leak in a situation where a worker fell into the water, requiring rescue teams to intervene. The leak also generated a large cloud of liquid natural gas in the vicinity.

Twelve firefighting units were activated at the Moll de l’Energia wharf and used some new equipment for the first time: a remote-controlled rescue buoy, an extinguishing robot and a drone. The drone was used to make an aerial reconnaissance of the area, to locate the injured person and provide live images of the operation to the advance command vehicle.

A rescue boat and a command vehicle also took part in the exercise. Two tugboats also worked in coordination with the firefighters.

The goals of the exercise included gauging the coordination on the ground between the Port Authority and the Barcelona Fire Service. Checks were also needed on their emergency response and external communications effectiveness, the effectiveness on the technology installed and more.
