When World War I broke out in 1914, the kingdom of Spain remained neutral, as did Barcelona. This meant that the city became a magnet for shady characters who passed through it, turning it into a chaotic and dangerous place. Despite this adversity, the city managed to improve, grow and evolve towards an albeit uncertain future. This volume examines a period of ten years that are crucial to the understanding of the city as we know it today: one that was just beginning to develop, a time full of changes and contradictions, which the citizens would fight to overcome.
