This book offers a social history of the sites of memory linked to the Civil War and the anti-fascist struggle in Barcelona, from the final years of Francoism to the early 21st century.

Through an examination of commemorations, monuments, territorial markers and symbolic disputes, it explores how different groups—both institutional and civic—have sought to shape the narrative of the past within the urban landscape.

From the lingering presence of Francoist commemorative structures to the rise of the memorialist movement, the study reveals the tensions between history, memory, oblivion and power. Far from treating sites of memory as static places, the book approaches them as contested settings, subject to reinterpretation, appropriation and resistance, where urban policy, ideological conflict and social demands intersect.
