Sarrià - Sant Gervasi: patrimoni documental i identitat cívica

Author/s
Daniel Venteo

Thanks to the Municipal Archive, the city of Barcelona has been taking care of its government’s documentary heritage continuously for over seven centuries. Sarrià-Sant Gervasi offers the perfect example of how safeguarding documentary heritage has enriched local identity with historical documents. The Municipal Archive of the District of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is one of the city’s centres with the most municipal documents from before the old independent villages were annexed onto the Catalan capital. This was the case for Sant Gervasi de Cassoles in 1897, and then Sarrià in 1921. Following the restoration of the democratic City Council, the Archive began a period of unprecedented growth and modernisation. Its historical collections, alongside the administrative documents generated by the local government in Barcelona, were brought together in 1988 to form the current Municipal Archive of the District of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
