Thanks to its Municipal Archive, Barcelona has cared for the documentary heritage of the city’s governance without interruption for over seven centuries. In 1931, a pioneering initiative began in Sants-Montjuïc that laid the foundations for the modern safekeeping of documents from the past: the Sants Historic Archive of the Excursionist Union of Catalonia. Since the restoration of the democratic City Council in 1979, the archive grew and was modernised, and after 1988 it became the Municipal Archive of the Sants-Montjuïc District.
