Barcelona Llibres is offering reading matter for free

Through the Institute of Culture, Barcelona City Council is helping to disseminate activities launched by public and private sectors to make culture accessible to city residents during their period of confinement, under the #LaCulturaTAcompanya [CultureKeepsYouCompany] campaign. Barcelona Llibres, Barcelona City Council’s publications website is giving you the chance to download books for free and to read different publications from the ISSUU platform. There you will find books about our city covering different themes and for all audiences, including small children.

On the Barcelona Llibres website there is a catalogue of books for download, aimed at making knowledge of the city available to all city resident in a free, easily accessible way. The period of confinement is the ideal opportunity to explore this open digital publications catalogue from the comfort of your own home.

Free books for download

The digital publications cover a wide range of themes, including history, architecture, urban planning, literature, feminism and governance, and can be downloaded for free in PDF format.

One of the publications is a highly detailed book containing the registers of over 125 factories located in Ciutat Vella, where you can find out how the factory houses model was developed in our city during the Industrial Revolution.

You can also find themes such as recent innovation in housing in Barcelona and sustainable and inclusive development in the 22@ area in Poblenou, in addition to the study on recovering the Canal de la Infanta. Regarding urban planning and architecture, you can discover some really interesting things such as architectonic solutions to integrate spaces where the urban fauna can nest and take refuge.

Among the historical memory publications, there is a collection of books that follow the footsteps of the women in the city’s districts. They are brimming with the life stories and experiences of the women in the neighbourhoods who, through their work and social struggles, have contributed to the social and community development of the city of Barcelona.

And then you can go from historical memory to literature, or more specifically to theatre creation, with another of the publications made freely available, the first volume of the plays written by the multifaceted Rossend Arús i Arderiu. Creator of the Arús Public Library and one of the most famous Catalan masons, at the end of the nineteenth century he also found time to write works for theatre.

And to round off the range of subject matter on offer, those who are interested in new forms of governance can read about the new organisational model proposed by Barcelona City Council, and for those who would like to polish up on their own writing style, there is John Solà’s now classic style guide.
