Hilari Salvadó i Castell (Barcelona, 1899-1966) was born into a modest family of fishermen in Barceloneta and was an accountant by profession. His activism in civic and cultural Catalanism led him first into local politics and finally to the Republican Left of Catalonia party. He became a Barcelona City Councillor in 1934 and was imprisoned as a result of the Events of 6th October. During the Spanish Civil War in 1937 and with the city under siege from fascist bombs, he was elected mayor, and was responsible for instigating a programme that would take in thousands of refugees.
