The legendary Rebotiga de Soler, the name by which the social gatherings hosted by playwright Frederic Soler, "Pitarra", were known in the 19th century, were no typical meetings. They were a rich tapestry of ideas and opinions where for years groups of more than fifty people from all walks of life such as painters, bohemians, activist, playwrights, psychiatrists, business people, actors and so on, would meet. This book tells us who they were and what they were like, how they thought, what they talked about, and even how they felt. Despite the significance of these meetings, there is no agreement as to their general tone.
Were they just for fun and purely artistic? Did the conversations simply revolve around spiritualism, homeopathy, theatre, music and humorous magazines? Or did they also become a place of conspiracy just before the September Revolution of 1868? Did they give rise to the earliest ideas of Catalanism? For the first time, this book provides the answers to all these questions.
