This first volume contains a long introductory study — over sixty pages — by Magí Sunyer i Molné, a senior lecturer at the Catalan Philology Department at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, which examines a representative selection of lesser-known 19th-century Catalan theatre, the theatre of amateur societies which entertained artisans and working-class audiences. It highlights the stature of Rossend Arús's political theatre and, above all, the importance of his realist contemporary dramas, in prose, which he was a pioneer in.
