What does the end of the moratorium on cycling on pavements mean?

On January 1 2019, the moratorium permitting bicycles to travel on pavements wider than 4.75 metres and with 3 metres of free space ends (approved in the amendment to the 2015 byelaw on pedestrian and vehicle traffic), and the new limit is set at a width of 5 metres and 3 metres of free space. Remember that if there is cycling infrastructure available on the road, cycling on the pavement is not permitted, regardless of width. Click this link for further information.

What safety features should my bicycle have?

Your bicycle must have a bell so that you can warn people of your presence. When you cycle at night, you must also have a white headlight and a red rear light, as well as approved reflectors. It is recommended that everyone wears a helmet, and it is compulsory for children under 16. Click this link for further information.

The 30 zones are streets with traffic calming where cycling is encouraged, as the speed limit for cars is 30 km/h.     What are the cyclable ways?

A cyclable way is made up of different types of road (cycle lane, 30 streets, 20 streets or single-surface streets) which provide continuity to cycle routes, whichever way they cross the city. They are vertical and horizontal routes across the city that make it easier to cycle round. Click this link for further information.

What is an advanced zone for bicycles (ZAB)?

A ZAB is a space in front of the stop line for motor vehicles which is designed to make it easier for bicycles to turn at certain crossroads. It makes waiting safer and gives priority to cyclists when the traffic light turns green.

How can I notify damage to a cycle lane?

To inform the City Council that a cycle lane is not in good condition (faded paint, separators out of place, potholes in the surface, etc.) you just have to fill in this form.

What can I do if my bicycle is stolen?

In the event of a theft, a report must be submitted to the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police). It is always best if you keep your receipt and a picture of the chassis number of your bicycle. We also recommend that you register your bicycle, to help to locate it in the event of loss, robbery or removal. This can be done at Barcelona Serveis Municipals offices from November 12.

Is it compulsory to use the cycle lane?

No, it is not. In Barcelona bicycles can travel on the road, in cycle lanes, 30 zones or specially adapted zones. However, for greater safety, we recommend using the cycle lanes and the cyclable ways and avoiding roads in the basic network. On the other hand, if there is cycling infrastructure on the road, you cannot travel on the pavement. Click this link for further information.
