This set of congresses and activities, held within the context of CICLOBCN21, are the result of efforts by the Government of Catalonia, which headed the initiative, along with Barcelona City Council, Barcelona Provincial Council, the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), the European Cycling Federation (ECF), the Portuguese Federation for Cyclotourism and Bicycle Users (FPCUB), ConBici and FEM Bicis, plus the support of volunteers and cycling organisations from around the world. The main event sponsor is Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), along with the Catalan firm Zicla.
EuroVelo & Cyclotourism Conference 2021
The EuroVelo & Cyclotourism Conference 2021, the main international congress in cyclotourism, is on from 5 to 7 October. The event gets under way with a full session to reflect on the contribution of cyclotourism in addressing the challenges to our society. Speakers include leading figures from the sphere of tourism, health and the bicycle, such as the current chair of the World Tourism Organisation, Dirk Glaesser, and the chair of the World Cyclists Alliance, Raluca Fiser. During the meeting, there will be presentations of successful cases and good practice in the spheres of health, infrastructures, research, innovation, the economic reactivation and the generation of jobs through cyclotourism.
The congress rounds off with the participation of representatives from leading cyclotourism destinations which have adapted to the current context by opting to definitively specialise in cyclotoruism, such as Limburg (Belgium), Bologna (Italy) and the Catalan Pyrenees, in this latter case through the participation of FGC.
7th International Congress and 18th Iberian Congress
The 7th International Bicycle Congress and the 18th Iberian “Bicycles and Cities” Congress (7 and 8 October) will be opening with a full session with representatives from cities and metropolises which have firmly backed the use of bicycles as priority vehicles in recent years
Topics addressed over the two-day congress, with presentations, workshops, audio-visuals and round tables, will mainly include the resilience of cities and territories, the promotion of the local economy and knowledge, promotion systems, monitoring and governance, cities and people’s territories, ecology, health and sport, participation and cycling communities.
In addition, specific meetings will cover funding for cycling projects, opting for inter-modal systems, the management of cycling-centred cities and territories, with representatives from the Cities for Cycling Network, and the city and the region through different perspectives (active ageing, gender, childhood or accessibility). The two-day congress concludes with the presence of Pierre Serne, the current chair of the Club de Villes et Territoires Cyclables, who will be taking part in a session on governance and interaction between the social network and administrations.
Finally, on 9 and 10 October, there will be social activities by organisations and Barcelona City Council, coinciding with their annual bicycle festival.
