As philosopher Daniel Gamper says, laughter is language and, like words, it can be polite, false, friendly, scathing, insulting, and discriminatory. In a context of deeply polarized and simplified public debate on social media, humor can be an easy tool for discrimination or intolerance. At the same time, our societies are becoming increasingly diverse, and we must learn to coexist with other values and imaginaries. What role should humor play in our democracies? Is everything fair game for laughter, or should we agree on some limits?
