Literary awards given in Barcelona

A large number of literary, cultural and editorial awards are announced and presented every year in Barcelona in recognition of poetry, fiction or plays, as well as translations, publishers, book shops or public figures who help support, promote and publicise local and international literature and culture.

A
ÁNGEL CRESPO DE TRADUCCIÓ EN CASTELLÀ

Organised by the Associació Col·legial d'Escriptors de Catalunya, the Centro Español de Derechos Reprográficos and the Gremi d'Editors de Catalunya, the Angel Crespo award is presented every year to a poem, fictional novel or play translated into Spanish.

APEL·LES MESTRES - DESTINO D’ÀLBUM IL·LUSTRAT

In homage of the writer, musician and illustrator Apel·les Mestres (1854-1936) and to foster and promote works combining text and illustration, the publishing house Destino has been presenting the Destino Apel·les Mestres award since 1981 to the best illustrated album.

ATLÀNTIDA

Since 1986, the Gremi d'Editors de Catalunya has been presenting the Atlàntida award to a public figure for their work in promoting reading and their commitment to culture. Jordi Savall, Joan Manuel Serrat, Javier Solana, José Manuel Blecua or Isabel Coixet are just a few of the previous winners.

BARCANOVA DE LITERATURA INFANTIL I JUVENIL

Since 2002, the Barcanova award has been given to original, unpublished works written in Catalan and aimed at the juvenile and child audience. The award is divided into two modalities, child and juvenile, and has been presented to Xavier Bertran (2002), Maria Carme Roca (2005), Jordi Sierra i Fabra (2011), Miquel Pujadó (2012), Maria Mercè Roca (2012) and Joan Bustos (2015), among others.

CARLES RIBA DE POESIA

In memory of the poet and translator Carles Riba (1893-1959), the Carles Riba award has been presented since 1959 to original, unpublished poetry written in Catalan. The award is given by Edicions Proa with the sponsorship of Fundació Enciclopèdia Catalana.

CAVALL VERD

The Associació d’Escriptors en Llengua Catalana has been presenting the Cavall Verd poetry awards since 1984. The Cavall Verd awards are divided into two categories: the Rafel Jaume award for the best translation of poetry published in Catalan, and the Josep M. Llompart award for the best book of poetry published in Catalan.

CIUTAT DE BARCELONA

Nominated by Barcelona City Council’s Institut de Cultura, the Ciutat de Barcelona awards are given for creations, research and productions of quality taking place in the city over the previous year. The twenty categories forming the annual awards include "Catalan literature", "Spanish literature" and "Translation into Catalan".

CREXELLS DE NOVEL·LA

The Crexells award, the oldest prize in catalan language, is presented by Ateneu Barcelonès. It was first established in 1928 until 1938, when the Civil War interrupted it. It wasn't reinstated until 1981. A jury proposes three finalists and after one winning novel among them.

CRIMS DE TINTA

The La Magrana publication series, which forms part of the RBA group, present the Crims de Tinta award every year to a noir, crime or thriller novel written originally in Catalan. Núria Cadenes (2016), Emili Bayo (2015), Andreu Martín (2012) and Marc Pastor (2008) are just some of the authors to have received the award.

CRÍTICA SERRA D’OR

The Crítica Serra d'Or award has been presented every year since 1967. This is a prestigious award given by Publicacions de l'Abadia de Montserrat and the magazine Serra d'Or and involves different categories: from novels to research, including poetry and plays.
