First combined visit as part of the “Business and Schools” programme with the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Markets
A new educational activity connects neighbourhood commerce and municipal markets to promote responsible consumption amongst students in Barcelona.
On 7 October, the first combined guided tour between the “Business and Schools” programme and the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Markets was completed. The activity connected local commerce and municipal markets, offering students a comprehensive experience on the value of responsible consumption and the commercial fabric of Barcelona.
The day started out at El racó de la Rosa, where its owner, Rosa, received a group of twelve students from the Commerce and Customer Service PFI at Institut Lluïsa Cura. During the visit, she explained how the store works and the role it plays in the neighbourhood, opening a dialogue on the importance of consuming organic, local and natural cosmetics products, as well as on entrepreneurship and the management of a small business.
New stop: markets
Next, the students headed to Sant Antoni Market to complete the second part of their visit. Led by Sara, their educator and guide, they discovered the main spaces of the market and reflected on its social and economic functions in the city. They also analysed the origin of produce and the trades that coexist there, such as fishmongers, butchers and greengrocers, to better understand the importance of active, critical and responsible consumption.
The aim of this is to link the activities organised as part of “Business and Schools” with the visits organised by the Barcelona Municipal Institute of Markets to offer a new enriching activity for the students’ learning: visiting a local shop first and, later, the neighbourhood’s municipal market, two essential establishments to continue cultivating local consumption in Barcelona.
