Shops are not just an important economic activity all round Barcelona but also create a sense of community and bring life to neighbourhoods. Our city boasts a large commercial heritage, from traditional and iconic establishments across a historical legacy survives to this day to others that have only opened over the last few years. They all contribute too to Barcelona’s identity. And now, under an initiative “Barcelona Unique Shops” launched by Turisme de Barcelona with participation and support from the City Council’s Department of Commerce and in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and Commerce, Crafts and Fashion Consortium (CCAM) and Barcelona Oberta, the aim is to highlight the uniqueness of the city’s commercial establishments by showing them to visitors and tourists for discovery.

Seeing that tourism and culture represent two opportunities for local commerce, given their impact on consumption, “Barcelona Unique shops” aims to present shops that are unique within the city’s commercial heritage, establishments with a great diversity that stand out for their innovation as well as their quality.

A city with unique shops

The goal is to differentiate the attraction that Barcelona has for visitors coming to the city in search of experiences relating to shopping, culture, food and business. An opportunity, then, for strengthening local commerce. The idea is provided for under the strategic municipal government measure for boosting and raising the profile of commerce in Barcelona, by creating routes and proposed visits to commercial establishments organised according to type of shop:  Iconic, local, unique or specialist.

“Barcelona Unique Shops” is a label for shops where you can enjoy culture and commerce. You can find out all about it on the webpage Barcelona Shopping City Unique Shops, where besides the shops from around Barcelona taking part, users will be recommended various itineraries according to type of shop, from hundred-year ones to gourmet establishments and fashion and accessory designer workshops. Turisme de Barcelona is presently making this offer available, on demand, to professional collectives including tour guides, events organisers, travel agencies and companies.

Culture and commerce on a stroll

These are walks with an invitation to visit shops. An experience, in short. One of the routes now available and which was created in 2017 is the "Barcelona Genuine Shops”, which offers Barcelona's residents, visitors and tourists an opportunity for discovering, every Friday afternoon, the unique range of shops to be found in the El Born and Gòtic neighbourhoods, including hundred-year-old establishments and modern designer workshops specialising in fashion, jewellery and accessories. The route costs €25. This route is led by a professional guide offering cultural information on the neighbourhood.

Another of the proposals offered on demand from “Barcelona Unique Shops” is a stroll along the streets of the Gràcia district to visit various shops, led by an official guide, presenting the architectural heritage and information on the district during visits to shops identified with the graphic “Barcelona Unique Shops” emblem. This is merely a taste of the possibilities offered by the city through its unique shops, something the sets Barcelona apart from the world's other cities.
