Planning and making the most of shopping trips, shopping alone, prioritising vulnerable people and facilitating the work of people who work in food establishments are the main recommendations for shopping safely during the Covid-19 crisis.
A code of good practice agreed with the food sector sets out ten recommendations for citizens and ten for establishments selling food.
Recommendations for shoppers:
- Respect the instructions and recommendations given by establishments.
- Be understanding and have solidarity by prioritising shopping for certain groups.
- If possible, do your shopping alone.
- Wherever possible, help vulnerable people, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses to avoid having to go shopping.
- Plan shopping properly with a list to avoid unnecessary trips and keep shopping time to a minimum.
- Go shopping less often and shop for more things at a time, without hoarding products.
- Pay by credit card or mobile phone if you can and avoid contact with cash.
- Go to shops at different times and on different days to avoid build-ups of people.
- Try to make group orders, where one person can purchase for various families.
- Respect staff working in the food sector. Thanks to their efforts and commitment we are kept in supply at all times.
Recommendations for establishments:
- Set aside specific shopping times reserved for vulnerable groups and people providing essential services.
- Prioritise entry, access to products, payment and assistance for these groups.
- If possible, offer sales options online or by phone, with home delivery services.
- Make prevention measures available to customers, such as disinfectant hand gel, gloves, paper and open litter bins or pedal bins if they have to handle products directly.
- Provide protective measures for staff, such as masks, gloves, screens, goggles and disinfectant hand gel, and ensure working distances between workers and between them and the customers.
- Respect the maximum capacities recommended by the health authorities.
- Install signs to show the minimum distances for queues.
- Establish specific collection points where possible.
- Adapt opening times to be able to restock shelves properly and carry out prevention tasks.
- Collaborate when possible with the Food Bank and charities certified by Social Welfare.
