30 July is Anti-Romaphobia Day, an act of remembrance in memory of the 12,000 Roma people who were imprisoned in the Great Gypsy Round-Up of 30 July 1749 by order of the Marquis de la Ensenada under the mandate of King Ferdinand VI.
As part of this commemoration, Barcelona City Council and the associations of the Municipal Council for the Roma People are holding an event that has two aims: to remember one of the darkest and least known chapters in the history of the Roma people, the Great Gypsy Round-Up, and to celebrate Roma history and culture while demanding respect for their rights, and supporting the fight against discrimination and Romaphobia.
The ceremony is being held at the Convent de Sant Agustí Civic Centre on Thursday 27 July, from 6 pm.
There will be a special programme for the event that includes a show, a round discussion, the presentation of the “Baró Istardipé” mural, and a dramatised reading.
It will be attended by the First Vice-President of the Municipal Council of the Roma People of Barcelona, Francisco Vargas.
