Barcelona and Kobe promote open data through a data visualization competition

Barcelona and the Japanese city of Kobe have been sister cities for over 25 years and are both committed to promoting the use of open data, transmitting the usefulness of their analysis for the development of smart cities and increasing the exercise of data sovereignty by citizens.

This year, the two cities convene the third edition of the World Data Viz Challenge 2020 Barcelona-Kobe, a data visualization competition organised jointly by Kobe and Barcelona. The objective of this challenge, led by the BIT Habitat Foundation, is to identify the challenges of smart cities through data analysis and visualization and use them for the development of better public policies.

Participants can submit data visualizations in all types of formats: infographics, interactive graphics, maps, among others. The theme of the dataviz presented should reflect a reality or a problem of the city of Barcelona in the framework Sustainable Development Goals, which are aligned with the Strategy for the Promotion of the Agenda 2030 in the city of Barcelona.

The call for projects starts on the 14th of September and ends on the 26th of October. A jury formed by data experts will select 5 finalists and the selection will be made public on the 9th of November. Among these 5 projects, there will be a 1.000€ award for the best dataviz and a university mention of 250€ which will be given to the best dataviz presented by university students.

The presentation of dataviz finalists and the awards ceremony will take place on the 17th of November. Details about the final event format are still to be decided depending on the exceptional circumstances derived from Covidi-19.

The World Data Viz Challenge 2020 Barcelona-Kobe is organized  jointly by the municipalities of Barcelona and Kobe. On behalf of the Barcelona City Council, the BIT Habitat Foundation is leading the project, with the collaboration of the International Relations Office and the Municipal Data Office.

You will find more information about the competition as well as the Terms and the Call for participation on the World Data Viz Challenge 2020 Barcelona-Kobe website.
