New urban challenge to regenerate housing blocks with innovative and sustainable systems

Within the city model promoted by Barcelona, urban regeneration is a collective priority for improving the quality of spaces where we live, particularly housing and vulnerable and run-down urban fabrics.

New solutions must be found, not only for complete building renovations, but also to achieve a more efficient use of resources, to adapt to climate change and mitigate its effects. These solutions must also bring new materials and/or new uses for existing materials, new technology and new designs.

Thanks to the new urban planning regulations which allow prefabricated elements to be added to housing to improve its energy performance and liveability, Barcelona City Council’s Urban Regeneration Programme is launching this challenge with the goal of driving the regeneration of housing blocks with sustainable and innovative systems.

The call will be published at the end of July and proposals may be submitted until 7 October 2022. The winning projects are set to be announced in November, so that prototypes can be implemented between then and March 2023.
