Barcelona and the Japanese city of Kobe convene the third edition of the World Data Viz Challenge, a data visualization competition to identify the challenges of smart cities. The call for projects starts on the 14th of September.

Barcelona and Ghent launch the “EUROCITIES City Dialogue: the Use of Technologies in Response to COVID-19” debate on the challenges posed by digital technology in the fight against the pandemic, especially at the lockdown exit stage.

The “What if...? series of virtual conversations #desdecasa”, organised by the Fundació BIT Habitat, has attracted more than four thousand viewers, who also had the opportunity to participate and reflect in real time with the expert speakers. The series has tackled how to reformulate our digital environments to adapt to the new future brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

El confinament ens ha submergit de cop en el teletreball. L’excepcionalitat provocada per la Covid-19 ha posat de manifest que la transformació digital és necessària i que cal reinventar-nos com a professionals i reciclar el mercat laboral. En parlem al quart i últim diàleg virtual del cicle “I si...? Cicle de converses i reflexions #desdecasa”, que té com a convidats Genís Roca, expert internacional en l’àmbit de la transformació digital i de la societat de la informació, i Mar Galtés, periodista i autora del llibre Barcelona Startup.

La relació entre l’educació i les noves tecnologies (TIC) torna a un primer pla a causa del confinament per la crisi sanitària de la Covid-19. El sector educatiu s’enfronta al repte d’impartir clases a través dels canals digitals i de no deixar enrere l’alumnat que no en té accés. Xavier Bonal, catedràtic de sociologia a la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, i Evaristo Pérez, docent especialitzat en l’ús de les TIC a l’educació, reflexionen sobre el paper clau de la tecnologia en el futur de l’educació i i sobre la bretxa digital en el tercer diàleg virtual del cicle “I si…? Cicle de converses #desdecasa.

With the state of emergency for Covid-19, enforced private digital interaction has changed our relationship with emotions, people and ourselves. The second virtual dialogue in the “What if...? Discussion cycle #desdecasa” looks at this scenario with Marta Peirano, a journalist specialising in surveillance technologies and mass manipulation, and Liliana Arroyo, doctor in Sociology and researcher in the field of digital innovation and social impact with Esade.

“What if...? Discussion cycle #desdecasa” is a series of virtual dialogues organised by the Fundació BIT Habitat as a window for discussion and reflection on the current health emergency and the digital transformation which may result from this exceptional time. The first session is devoted to digital rights and technological sovereignty.

Barcelona City Council, through the Fundació BIT Habitat, is looking for SMEs and start-ups with ready-made solutions about to be rolled out which respond to one or several of the many challenges posed by the current health crisis.

Misty II, a robot that monitors and cares for its user, and a platform for meeting elderly people's basic and care needs have won the “How to improve elderly people's quality of life using technology” challenge, organised by the City Council and Mobile World Capital Barcelona as part of the 5G Barcelona initiative. The winners will receive €100,000 to fund a pilot test to try out their solutions in Barcelona, starting this coming March.

On the 19th of November, the second Members took of the Cities Coalition for Digital Rights took place in Barcelona, with a total of 15 cities present. We took the opportunity to reflect on the past  year, as well as to look forward to the next and to finalize the Coalition’s Strategy 2020.
