The finalists in the World Data Viz Challenge 2019 Barcelona-Kobe propose solutions for tackling the climate emergency
Both the Barcelona and the Kobe finalists analyse different aspects of the city and suggest how to improve the challenges faced by smart cities. This year the emphasis was on “Smart Cities and the Climate Emergency” in order to align the competition with the municipal Climate Plan. Consequently, a lot of the projects submitted, especially those from Barcelona, made reference toit.
Solutions for the effects of global warming
Among other ideas, the finalists propose solutions to tackle the consequences of global warming with projects that study the relationship between the number of green spaces in the city and the atmospheric temperature, what the conditions are in the neighbourhoods with the most vegetation and what are the most recommendable alternative routes for pedestrians when the temperature is extremely high in summer.
Others tackle motorbike mobility in Barcelona, the most recommendable school paths in the city or the impact of shopping online on the functioning of smart cities, in areas such as the effects on mobility or the impact on the local economy, for example. The interest in analysing and reducing natural disasters, especially in Japan, whether they are caused by the climate or earthquakes, is clear in the various themes dealt with.
The Barcelona-Kobe World Data Viz Challenge is a joint challenge between the two cities, first held in 2018 to mark the 25th anniversary of their twinning arrangement.
