Using data raises numerous questions and Barcelona’s DSIPLAY cycle of digital social innovation experiences has dedicated a session to projects that stand out for their ethical management and use of data, such as Raval Data Commons and Wikidata.

The climate emergency has been the focus of a good many of the finalist projects in the 2019 Barcelona-Kobe World Data Viz Challenge, with ideas for solving the effects of global warming in cities. These projects were presented on 19 November at the Smart City Expo World Congress.

The winning proposals for the two most recent i.lab challenges are “Clean energy from pavements”, by the company Sorigué, and “SOM Comunitat”, which aims to ensure the smart provision of care for elderly people, by the company URock. The Barcelona City Council launched the challenges through i.lab, the municipal laboratory for the acceleration of social and sustainable urban innovation. The winners were announced at the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC).

In this session of the DSIPLAY series of social digital innovation experiences we learned that there are other new approaches to food production, and how technology can help. The main principles are proximity and circularity, sustainable land and energy use, empowering people to produce their own food, and low emissions.
