More tech training to be offered at the new Cibernàrium in Nou Barris

The free tech skills-acquisition and dissemination service is back with the aim of reducing the digital divide and making tools and resources more available to the district, which has below-average socio-economic indicators. Because of this, the opening ceremony will be attended by shopping hubs, local residents’ associations and other organisations from the area, as well as people taking courses at the facility.

The new strategic location for digital training will be the Technology Park operated by Barcelona Activa. It will include the Campus de Programació 42 Barcelona, also free, launched in conjunction with the Fundació Telefònica and aimed at opening up access to the labour market.

The park is currently home to 40 companies and 270 professionals from the world of engineering and ICT. It also offers a business and innovation prototyping service and a digital fab lab, as well as promoting science and tech vocations, particularly in the district itself.

The Cibernàrium 22@ (MediaTIC, in the district of Sant Martí) and the city’s library network, through the antenna service, are also continuing to provide online and on-site training. The service has increased the number of users since the outbreak of the pandemic, with nearly 13,000 people having taken part in over 3,500 activities this year.

Gradual digitalisation to reduce area differences

This implementation means a new boost for the economic development plan for Nou Barris. The idea is to provide tools for citizens to improve professionally, and for gradual digitalisation in most aspects of daily life (procedures, services, commerce and leisure).

According to the study The Digital Divide in Barcelona, published in December 2020, during the lockdown some 56% of people living in low-income areas were unable to telework and some 25% of children were unable to continue with the their studies online. The study also shows significant socio-economic differences between areas, of up to 34% in the use of ICT, depending on the area of the city.
