Antoni Gaudí was not a designer

The architect and professor of History of Art and Architecture at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB), Juan José Lahuerta, will give the lecture "Against design: the Gaudí case" next Wednesday, January 20, at 19 h. The conference can be followed by streaming.

Lahuerta, who has participated in the catalog of the new exhibition "Modernism, towards the design culture" at the Design Museum with the article "Gaudí imagines and the craftsman performs" questions and denies the possibility of considering Antoni Gaudí as a designer.

His thesis maintains that the design, as such, is part of a project, that is to say, of an intellectual work in which what is to be executed is defined in detail in a series of documents, and is subsequently executed following the plans.

Gaudí does not work like that, according to Lahuerta: what the "genius of modernism" does is a completely experimental practice, related to modernity, to doing and undoing in which, moreover, there is rarely an end to the project.

Juan José Lahuerta, who currently directs the Gaudí Chair at ETSAB, is also the founder and director of the Mudito & Co. collection, which in 2007 received an FAD Medal for its editorial work. In addition to curating numerous exhibitions in different Spanish cities, Lahuerta has been an advisor to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, senior curator at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona and head of collections at the Museo Nacional de Arte de Catalunya (MNAC). He has collaborated in numerous publications around the world, participating in the editorial offices and scientific advice of magazines on architecture, art, urban planning and the city.
