Architecture, on the silver screen
Between 11 and 16 May, Barcelona will host the BARQ Festival, the first and unique, international and competitive film festival for architecture and interior design in Spain. The event is an initiative of the production company Nihao Films supported by the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (COAC) and the Interdisciplinary Association of Space Design (ARQUIN-FAD) . As a matter of fact, ARQUIN-FAD has received this festival very positively. “It is important that activities, initiatives or actions arise that promote knowledge and dissemination of architecture, and in this case, being the first architecture film festival in Barcelona and Spain, it is twice as important to support projects like this one”, stated Pep Quilez, member of ARQUIN-FAD, architect and project manager at Pepstudio.
The BARQ Festival can be seen in different city spaces: Cinemes Girona, the Disseny Hub in Barcelona, the Filmoteca de Catalunya, the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, Macba and Roca Barcelona Gallery. It can also be followed on-line via the Filmin platform.
For this first edition, they have received almost 200 entries opting for one of the two awards, the award for Best Documentary Film and for Best Documentary Short Film. Among the chosen works there are films from all over the world covering themes related with architecture, as well as urban activism, the environment or access to housing, among others.
The first edition of the BARQ Festival will coincide with Barcelona Architecture Week 2021, which will be held between 6 and 16 May. Events such as the film festival are key, therefore, to reinforcing the connection between architecture and the people. “We have an architectural heritage that we must showcase and that we must be able to explain to everyone, to those who live in the city of Barcelona as well as those who come to visit. It is important to understand that architecture and the design of spaces do not just meet a functional need, but they also bring value”, added Pep Quilez.
