In the Bauhaus Kitchen: a trip to Weimar's school through the palate

“The objective of the Bauhaus, of course, was to improve the experience of the human beings by designing everything around then. […] The intelligence, elegance and artistic design of the kitchen, as well of the design of its utensils: everything connects us with balance and grace and nourishes the soul. In other words, a feeling of harmony and mental well-being in each aspect of our daily lives". This is the beginning of the essay "In the Bauhaus Kitchen" by the writer Nicholas Fox Weber.

This is the starting point of the homonymous project curated by food designer Elsa Yranzo and industrial designer Sebastian Alberdi. The objective is to celebrate the centenary of the Bauhaus by creating an artistic and gastronomic experience around a table, and thus recreate the spirit and values of the iconic Weimar school by interpreting how food culture was a central point of interest.

Last fall Yranzo and Alberdi brought together some of the most creative minds of the Barcelona scene to explore the intersections between art, design and gastronomy with a multidisciplinary perspective. The scene of this experiment was the Barcelona Pavilion, designed by Mies van der Rohe -the last director of the Bauhaus- and Lily Reich on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1929.

Now, the memory of that multisensory trip takes the form of a documentary film and will be presented next Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Design Museum of Barcelona. The event is co-organized by the BCD Barcelona Design Center. The film gathers the creative works that emerged, as well as the experience in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and a series of interviews with the different guests who revived the essence of the Bauhaus in their palates.
