Design, materials, health and technology, join together for the Barcelona Mask project

The use of face masks is now something normal in our everyday life. But, how can they be safer and more sustainable? A group of experts from entities in Barcelona in the fields of design, materials, health and technology have combined their knowledge to promote a new project, Barcelona Mask. Specifically, they are the FAD, the Materfad, the Clinic Hospital of Barcelona and Leitat, which will propose innovative solutions to promote the design of a series of face masks and elements of protection for the population. It is a multi-disciplinary project that aims to respond to criteria of safety, sustainability, usability, comfort, inclusivity and accessibility.

To activate this project, a survey was implemented on the use of face masks. The results will be used as the starting point for the elaboration of bases for a multi-disciplinary design, science and technology competition to make pre-industrial prototypes of a series of face masks. The involvement and commitment of Materfad during the pandemic has materialised in more than one project. Apart from BarcelonaMask, this materials centre in Barcelona created and promoted by FAD has been working intensely on the identification of materials and manufacture of solutions to deal with COVID-19. Among others, it has collaborated on the project of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism for the identification of companies able to provide materials for the manufacture of single-use healthcare products, and on the platform COVID Warriors.
