The Design Museum celebrated sexual and gender diversity by participating in the ‘LGTBI Museums’ project

Coinciding with the holding of International LGTBI Pride Day, on June 28, seven cultural institutions demonstrated their commitment to sexual and gender diversity by participating in the ‘LGBTI Museums’ project, which proposes to transform their spaces and programming with the aim of focusing attention on realities that have been underrepresented or unknown to date in customary museographic presentations.

The Barcelona Design Museum was one of the seven amenities that participated in this initiative, and it did so by organising the permanent exhibition ‘El cos vestit: siluetes i moda (1550-2015)’ (‘The Clothed Body: Silhouettes and Fashion (1550-2015’)). Until 29 August, this show will include special signposting to five pieces selected to explain unisex, agender or genderless fashion. Each piece will be accompanied by a text explaining the changes which, from the gender perspective, have taken place in the course of the history of fashion from the early 20th century until the present day.

Apart from the Design Museum, other participant institutions in ‘LGTBI Museums’ were the Miró Foundation, the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia, the Barcelona Natural Sciences Museum, the Barcelona Maritime Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia and the Museums of Sant Cugat del Vallès. The initiative also had the support of the Barcelona LGTBI Centre.
