Final stages of the temporary exhibition "Victor Papanek: The politics of design"

The temporary exhibition "Victor Papanek: The politics of design" is on its closing stages. The exhibition will close its doors on February 2nd with a more than positive welcome of the public to open the way to all the shows and activities that 2020 will bring to the Design Museum of Barcelona. Before that happens, an extensive program of activities will take place, focused on the role of design as a tool for social transformation and addressed to all kind of audiences.

At the same time, the exhibition “On the road of Victor Papanek” kicked off last December and brings together one hundred projects created by 380 design students from different colleges and schools. The exhibition includes the work that results from two proposals made to the students: "The Museum in a tone of Papanek", a rereading of the pieces of the graphic and industrial design exhibitions based on the thesis of sustainability, accessibility and codesign; and "Playing with Papanek", which consisted of proposing the design of elements or environments for children's games in outdoor spaces.

On the other hand, the civic centers Joan Oliver "Pere Quart" and Vil·la Urània will soon present the program "Designing real worlds", starting from a reading of Papanek's ideas to open a critical thinking framework around concepts such as ecology, social transformation and minority rights. The workshops will be "Utopia, dystopia, abstractions", conducted by the sociologist Helen Torres; "All people are designers," conducted by the science, technology and society researcher Blanca Callén; and "Weaving multiple possibilities" conducted by the artist and activist Irene Pérez. The cycle, curated by bookstore La Caníbal, will close with a day of open talks and debates, and will also include dynamic visits to the Papanek exhibition. All activities are free with prior booking.

The Design Museum will also host the round table “Collaboration vs. Resistance”, in which different experts will propose an apparent dichotomy between working with companies and at the same time defending positions of sustainability or degrowth. In addition to the debate, which will be conducted by the artist Oscar Guayabero, there will be the presentation of two projects: “Furniture for Foundawtion” by furniture maker Marc Morro; and "Cross Cultural Chairs" by designer Matteo Guarnaccia. The event will be on January 17, at 6:30 pm. Free admission, limited room.

The final closing ceremony will take place on January 31st at the Design Museum. Meanwhile, you can enjoy the guided tours of the exhibition every Saturday at 11 am, as well as the family workshop "The world of Victor Papanek", in which the attendees will build a tactile memory game designed so everyone can play (book your place here).
