A new look at the Design Museum’s product design collection

The Design Museum has inaugurated a new permanent exhibition on product design: ‘Common Objects: local stories, global debates’. This presents a new look at the Museum’s collection, curated by the historian and designer Oriol Pibernat, which aims to demonstrate the enormous social, aesthetic and cultural impact of design, capable of converting everyday objects into exemplary pieces with cultural relevance. Organised in four large sections, it reveals that design channels collective patrimonial values of multiple and shared identities and citizenries, in addition to entering into dialogue with present-day themes, seeking to provide responses to the challenges we face as a society. All of this without overlooking the link between design and Barcelona, highlighting the importance this discipline has had in the city throughout the 20th century and up to the present day. With this new permanent exhibition, the Design Museum and the Disseny Hub consolidate themselves as international referents of design carried out in Barcelona, Catalonia and the Spanish State.

In addition, this new exhibition also signifies a reorganisation of the establishment to bring design closer to the public, as it is located in the ground floor of the building, thus becoming the entrance to the Museum.
