Sustainability and accessibility at Openness 2021

Next week, the Design Museum of Barcelona will host the exhibition Openness. Open City. The show is organised by 4th year product design students from the Higher School of Design and Visual Arts of Catalonia from the Llotja Campus and can be seen from 9 February to 14 March.

The show want to introduce the “Openness” concept, a philosophy and way of doing things based on openness, transparency and free access to knowledge with the objective of sharing, improving, personalising, decentralising the design process and making it more accessible to users. Open Design makes a series of resources available to the user to obtain more sustainable products in social, economic and environmental fields.

And it is precisely what the ESDAP students are doing through the eight pieces of household furniture designed to be easy to build. Openness 2021 offers users free access to the material for creating the pieces and encourages them to build the object they like most. So, we find a step stool, a centre table, a table-bench, a side table, a flowerpot holder, a work station, a shoe cabinet and a chair. The common element of all the pieces of furniture is wood, an easy material to obtain and handle.

At Openness 2021 we can also see pieces from the “Invisible Enemy” project by 3rd year students. It is an exercise that puts a system designed by another person into practice. “Invisible Enemy” incorporates a critical tone to “Secret Santa/Invisible Friend” gifts and promotes the critical ability of doubting our behaviour as users trying to incorporate improvements into the design of systems.

This show will also include two pieces of open code furniture from past events of the Openness project in 2019 and 2020. Specifically, they are Sth-Added 1.0 and 3.0, a modular shelving unit and Tetra, a coat stand.
