Let's break through the glass ceiling

Today, most executive positions, both in the private and the public sector, continue to be filled by men, while women find themselves stuck in lower-skilled positions, even in female-dominated sectors.

This segregation, which prevents women from achieving positions of greater responsibility in the professional sphere, is based on gender stereotypes and traditional leadership models. The gender income and pension gap, the feminisation of poverty, the loss of talent, the lack of female role models in leadership positions and the psycho-social risks that affect women's health and physical, psychological and emotional wellbeing, are some of the consequences of this invisible barrier that stands between them and management positions.

For all these reasons, on 8 March this year, let’s break through the glass ceiling!

8M Maria Aurèlia Capmany Award

The 38th edition of the 8 March - Maria Aurèlia Capmany Award, with the theme “Let’s break through the glass ceiling”, aims to support initiatives and projects that help promote affirmative action to eradicate vertical segregation in different economic and social sectors.

To mark International Women’s Day, since 1987 Barcelona City Council has been holding the 8 March Awards, which bear the name of Maria Aurèlia Capmany in homage to the well-known Catalan writer.

The award ceremony will take place on 11 March 2024 in the Saló de Cent.

Reading of the manifesto

This 8 March, for the first time, a manifesto will be read expressing Barcelona City Council’s firm commitment to the feminist struggle and denouncing the inequality and discrimination that women experience in all spheres of life and at a structural level simply for being women.

The aim of this official event is to reaffirm the City Council’s commitment to continue making headway with innovative and transformative feminist policies.

The reading of the manifesto will take place on 8 March at 9.00 am in Plaça Sant Jaume and will be accompanied by the unveiling of a banner featuring the image of the 8 March campaign on the balcony of the City Hall, this year with the theme “Let’s break through the glass ceiling”.

Feminist conversations

The “Feminist conversations” are a series of events designed with and for women, associations and organisations from the city to find solutions to some of the main challenges that pose a barrier to achieving real and effective equality.

Six working groups have defined the key proposals and interests so that all the participants can work together to make new contributions and commitments to progress in developing future municipal feminist policies.

The event will take place on 22 and 23 March in the Auditorium at Pompeu Fabra University with the participation of leading experts and women with notable careers in a variety of professional sectors.
